Bad boy Joey Barton has insisted he wants to stay at Newcastle despite the club’s relegation and his bust-up with Alan Shearer.

But Barton, 26, admits his fate isn’t in his own hands – especially if Shearer stays as boss.

Speaking publicly for the first time since he was suspended and banned from training after his sending-off at Liverpool and row with Shearer, the fiery midfielder pledged to redeem himself.

“My intention is to stay at the club and help Newcastle back into the Premier League,” he said.

“If Alan Shearer takes the job and he doesn’t want me, my hands are tied.

“All I can do is get as fit as possible. I have to prepare for all eventualities.’’
